About HECS-HELP
These courses can be paid for through the HECS-HELP government loan scheme. If you are an Australian citizen or hold a permanent humanitarian visa, you may not need to pay upfront.
Instead, the Australian government will pay your course fees directly to the provider on your behalf. You’ll begin repaying your loan through the tax system once you start earning more than the minimum threshold of $54,435 (2024-25 income year).
FAQs
You apply through your university when you enrol in a Commonwealth supported place. You’ll need to provide your tax file number and a valid Unique Student Identifier (USI).
Some postgraduate CSP courses are eligible for HECS-HELP, but not all. Availability depends on the institution and specific course structure. Always check with your provider or StudyAssist.
A CSP means the government subsidises part of your university fees, and you only pay the remaining ‘student contribution’. HECS-HELP can be used to defer this payment.
Your existing loan remains, and new enrolments under a CSP can also be covered. Your accumulated HELP debt grows with each eligible course until you reach your lifetime cap.
You can track your balance via your myGov account linked to the ATO. This shows your current debt and repayment history.
