Study at TAFE (Technical and Further Education) or with a VET (Vocational Education and Training) provider and get a valuable learning experience, as well as a nationally recognised qualification. The great thing about TAFE/VET courses is they have lower entry requirements, offer more practical ‘hands-on’ learning and are government regulated – which means you’ll be getting the highest in educational standards. Graduate with a certificate or diploma and seek employment, or use your qualification as credit toward higher education programs.

Private colleges are small, independent tertiary education providers that usually focus on a specialised field such as science, law, business, medicine and art. They cater to a smaller number of students for a more tight-knit community and personalised learning experience. Many private colleges around Australia offer short courses, bachelor degrees, postgraduate degrees and VET courses.

The Australian government offers a loan scheme known as HEC-HELP or FEE-HELP to assist students in paying all or part of their tuition fees. HEC-HELP or FEE-HELP is available to students planning to study at a university or other HELP approved tertiary providers. To be eligible for assistance you must be an Australian citizen or permanent visa holder residing in Australia. Once graduates begin working and reach the compulsory repayment threshold they will be required to gradually repay their HELP debt.

Fee for service (sometimes called full fee-paying or upfront payment) means you pay your course fees directly to the provider, rather than through a government loan scheme like HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP. This is common for short courses, professional development and courses that aren’t approved for government loan schemes. Many providers offer flexible payment options, including payment plans or instalments, alongside the choice to pay upfront in full. It’s a good idea to check directly with your provider to see what payment options are available before you enrol.
