What is a Personal Care Assistant?
A Personal Care Assistant (PCA) supports people who need help with daily living. These include elderly people and people with illness or disability. PCAs work in aged care homes, hospitals, and private homes across Australia.
PCAs help with a wide range of daily tasks. They assist with bathing, dressing, grooming, and eating. They also help people move safely and talk with others. This hands-on care is a central part of every PCA’s day.
PCAs also play a key part in the care team. They help build and follow care plans with nurses and other staff. They watch clients closely and report any health changes to the right people. Some PCAs help with recovery exercises and give medicines as directed.
Demand for PCAs is very strong across Australia. The sector is growing because of an ageing population. For those who enjoy caring for others, this is a practical career with good job security and flexible hours.

What will I do?
What skills do I need?
Personal Care Assistants need a mix of practical and people skills. Communication is key. PCAs talk with clients, families, and health staff every day. They need to listen well, explain clearly, and keep all parties up to date on care.
Empathy and patience are just as important as hands-on ability. Many clients deal with pain, dementia, or distress. PCAs need to stay calm and caring in these times. Good observation skills are also key. Noticing small changes in a client’s health and reporting them quickly can improve outcomes.
The role also needs physical stamina. PCAs often help clients move or transfer from bed. Basic health and safety knowledge is key, including first aid and safe medicine handling. Being flexible rounds out the skill set. No two clients or shifts are alike.
