What is a IT Sales Representative?
An IT Sales Representative sells computer hardware, software and ICT services to businesses. They find clients, check their needs and match them with the right tech. This role links IT vendors with the clients who need their products.
Day-to-day tasks are varied and always involve people. IT Sales Representatives quote and negotiate prices, arrange delivery and set up products, and report to sales managers. They follow up with clients to check all is well and fix any issues. They also keep expense records and write sales reports.
The role spans many industries. Most IT Sales Representatives work in information media, professional services, retail trade or wholesale trade. Around 90% work full-time, averaging 43 hours per week (Jobs and Skills Australia, 2025). Demand for this role is rated very strong, driven by ongoing digital investment (yourcareer.gov.au, 2025).
For people who love tech and working with people, IT sales is a great career path. There is no one entry route. Some start with a business cert, others with an IT diploma. Many add vendor certifications over time.

Strong communication sits at the core of this role. IT Sales Representatives explain complex products clearly to clients who may not have a technical background. They listen well, ask the right questions and find solutions that match client needs.
Technical knowledge is equally important. A solid grasp of hardware, software and ICT services helps representatives answer questions and build trust. Time management, CRM software skills and the ability to negotiate are all key to day-to-day success. Adaptability matters too, as new products and market shifts are constant in this field.
