About VET Student Loans (VSL)

A VET Student Loan (VSL) is a government loan that helps students to cover tuition fees for vocational education and training (VET) courses. VSLs are only available for approved courses at the diploma level and above.

There is a limit to how much you can borrow, called the ‘loan cap’. The loan cap amount is different depending on the course you study. Some providers may offer courses that cost more than the loan cap. In these cases, students must pay the difference between the course cost and the loan cap.

FAQs

Which courses are eligible for VET Student Loans?

Only approved diploma, advanced diploma, graduate certificate, and graduate diploma courses are eligible. The full list is available on the Department of Education website.

Can I use a VET Student Loan to study online?

Yes, many VSL-approved courses are offered online. Check with the provider to ensure the course meets eligibility and delivery criteria.

Is there a limit to how many times I can use a VET Student Loan?

Yes. Students are subject to a loan cap and may only use the loan for courses on the approved list. You must also maintain progression and engagement in your course.

What is a VET Student Loan debt cap?

This refers to the maximum amount you can borrow under the scheme. Course-specific caps apply and range from around $5,000 to over $15,000. Any amount over the cap must be paid upfront or privately financed.

How does a VET Student Loan compare with HECS-HELP?

HECS-HELP is for university students, while VSL is designed for vocational education. Both involve deferred repayments via the tax system, but they support different course types and providers.
