What is a Sales Assistant?
A Sales Assistant helps customers find and buy goods or services in a retail or wholesale setting. They are often the first person a customer meets. Most work in shops, supermarkets, hardware stores or department stores.
Day to day, Sales Assistants greet customers, answer product questions and process payments. They restock shelves, tidy displays and help with stocktakes. They handle returns and pass feedback to store managers.
No formal degree is needed to start. Many employers hire on attitude and speaking skills. Once in the role, workers can earn the Certificate III in Retail (SIR30216). This 12-month traineeship is done through a TAFE or RTO. It builds formal skills and opens doors to better pay and promotion.
Over 562,000 people work as Sales Assistants in Australia (source: Jobs and Skills Australia, 2025). This makes it one of the largest jobs in the country. Around 75% work part-time, which suits students and those seeking flexible hours. Annual job growth sits at about 9,500 new roles per year.

Sales Assistants need strong speaking and listening skills above all else. They talk with many customers each day. A friendly, patient manner builds trust and keeps customers coming back.
Good number skills matter too. Sales Assistants handle cash, process sales and check stock. Attention to detail helps them spot errors and keep records right. Staying calm under pressure is useful during busy periods or when dealing with a complaint.
