What is a Reservoir Engineer?
A reservoir engineer assesses, models, and optimises the recovery of oil and gas from underground formations. They use geology, fluid mechanics, and simulation software to determine how much a reservoir can produce. They then plan how to extract those resources safely and efficiently. Most roles in Australia are based in Western Australia and Queensland. These two states host the nation’s largest oil and gas fields.
Day-to-day, reservoir engineers build and refine computer models of underground reservoirs. They analyse well and production data to track performance and spot problems early. They work closely with geologists, drilling engineers, and production teams. Their recommendations shape drilling programs and field development plans.
Around 2,400 petroleum engineers are employed across Australia (Jobs and Skills Australia, 2025). Ninety per cent work full-time, and the median age is 39. Future demand is rated Strong, supported by ongoing LNG production and the need to manage mature fields efficiently.
The average salary is around $155,000 per year, and senior engineers often earn over $200,000 (PayScale, 2025). Entry requires a four-year Bachelor of Engineering (Petroleum Engineering) or equivalent, accredited by Engineers Australia.
