A Research Scientist studies questions in a chosen science field and turns data into new knowledge. They design tests, collect results, and use analysis to push the limits of what is known.
Research Scientists work in labs, field sites, and research bodies. They may focus on biology, chemistry, physics, or a range of other fields. Many work in teams with other scientists, engineers, or government staff.
Day-to-day tasks include writing reports, applying for grants, and sharing findings at conferences. Research Scientists also read the work of other researchers to stay current in their field. Strong writing skills are just as vital as lab skills.
Demand for Research Scientists continues to grow. Australia’s STEM workforce grew 19.7% in five years, almost twice as fast as other jobs (Jobs and Skills Australia, 2025). This growth creates real chance for scientists at all career stages.
Research Scientists need a mix of technical and writing skills. Both are vital in this role.
On the technical side, strong data analysis is crucial. Research Scientists must know how to design valid tests, read complex data, and use data tools. Lab skills and clear writing are also key.
Writing and speaking matter just as much. Research Scientists explain their work to both expert and non-expert groups. They write grant bids, prepare journal papers, and present at conferences. Clear writing helps career progress.
Teamwork and the ability to adapt round out the skill set. Most research spans more than one field. Research Scientists must change course when results are not as expected and manage work across many tasks.
