A Policy Analyst develops and reviews policies that guide government programs in Australia. They research issues, assess options, and advise decision-makers.
Policy Analysts work across many sectors. The main employers are federal and state agencies, health services, and expert firms. Around 29.9% work in the ACT (Jobs and Skills Australia, 2025). This is where the federal public service is based.
Each day, analysts review laws, write briefing papers, and consult with stakeholders. They need strong writing skills, clear thinking, and the ability to turn research into plain advice.
Most Policy Analysts hold a degree in political science, public policy, economics, or a related field. Many also hold a postgraduate degree. Around 86% have a degree or above (ABS Census, 2021).
A career as a Policy Analyst calls for a mix of research, writing, and analysis skills. Analysts must interpret data and turn it into clear, practical advice.
Strong writing is essential. Policy Analysts write reports and present findings to government leaders, industry groups, and the public. Making complex ideas simple is a key strength.
Critical thinking, project skills, and a good grasp of how government works round out the skill set. Many also use data tools and both research methods – qualitative and quantitative.
