What is a Paramedic?
A paramedic provides emergency medical care at the scene of an accident or medical crisis. They are the first trained health professional to arrive when a life-threatening event occurs.
Paramedics assess patients, give medications, perform CPR, and use life-support equipment. They work in ambulances, hospitals, and community health settings across Australia. Every practising paramedic must be registered with AHPRA through the Paramedicine Board of Australia.
You need at least a Bachelor of Paramedicine to enter the field. This three-year degree covers anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and clinical skills. Graduates complete a supervised internship before working on their own.
Paramedics can move into Intensive Care or Primary Care roles with further study. Strong demand exists for paramedics across urban, rural, and remote Australia.

What will I do?
What skills do I need?
Working as a paramedic demands both clinical skill and emotional strength. Paramedics must think quickly, stay calm, and make life-or-death decisions in difficult situations.
Strong clinical knowledge is the foundation. Paramedics need to understand anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology to assess patients and choose the right treatment. Communication is just as vital. They work with patients in distress, their families, and other emergency services. Clear, calm communication is essential at all times.
Physical fitness matters too. The role involves lifting patients, working in cramped spaces, and handling long shifts. Paramedics must also keep detailed records, operate complex equipment, and stay current through ongoing professional development.
