What is a NatHERS Assessor?
A NatHERS Assessor rates the energy efficiency of residential buildings. They work under Australia’s Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS). Approved software models a home’s thermal performance and produces a star rating out of 10.
Assessors work with builders, architects, and homeowners. They review building plans and check insulation, window placement, glazing, and ventilation. Since May 2024, most new homes must reach at least 7 NatHERS stars. They must also meet a whole-of-home energy rating under National Construction Code 2022.
Assessors prepare written reports and explain results to clients. Clear communication is just as important as technical skill. Many work as independent consultants; others join building design or engineering firms.
Rising energy costs and stricter building codes are driving demand for qualified NatHERS Assessors across Australia. This is a practical, growing career for those who care about sustainable building.

What will I do?
What skills do I need?
A NatHERS Assessor needs a solid mix of technical knowledge and people skills. Building design, thermal performance, and energy efficiency form the core of the role. NatHERS-approved software tools include Hero, FirstRate5, and BERS Pro. You need to be comfortable modelling and rating home designs in at least one of these.
Good communication is just as important as technical ability. Assessors must explain star ratings and report findings to builders, architects, and homeowners clearly. Attention to detail and the ability to spot issues in building plans are also key. Staying current with changes to the National Construction Code keeps your assessments accurate and credible.
