What will I do?

Motor mechanics find faults, carry out repairs and service motor vehicles to keep them safe on the road. The work is hands-on and varied, covering everything from oil changes to full engine rebuilds.

  • Diagnosing faults – Finding issues in engines and parts using inspection and diagnostic tools.
  • Taking apart components – Removing engine assemblies, gearboxes and other parts for repair or replacement.
  • Repairing and replacing parts – Fixing or swapping worn or faulty components and putting systems back together.
  • Carrying out services – Doing oil changes, lubrications and engine tune-ups to keep vehicles running well.
  • Rebuilding engines – Putting engines and components back together after repairs are done.
  • Testing parts – Checking repaired components to confirm they work as they should.
  • Using diagnostic computers – Running software tests to find and fix faults in engine systems.
  • Inspecting vehicles – Checking roadworthiness and issuing certificates or listing needed repairs.

What skills do I need?

Motor mechanics need a mix of technical and practical skills. Strong fault-finding ability is at the core of the trade. Mechanics read fault codes, use service manuals and find problems in complex systems. Good hand control and physical fitness are key for working with heavy parts in tight spaces.

Communication and customer service skills matter just as much. Mechanics explain faults and repair costs to customers in clear, plain language. They also work with service advisors and parts suppliers. The car industry is changing fast. Mechanics who keep learning in EV and hybrid tech will have a strong edge.
