What is a Geophysicist?

A geophysicist studies how the Earth works. They use physics, maths and geology to map the Earth’s layers and rock types. Their work helps find natural resources like minerals, oil and groundwater. Geophysicists also study earthquakes, landslides and other hazards to help keep people safe.

Most geophysicists work in mining and resources. Others work in consulting, government research or oil and gas. Geoscience Australia, state geological surveys and mining companies all hire them. Western Australia has over half of all geoscientist jobs in Australia (Jobs and Skills Australia, 2025).

A career in geophysics starts with a bachelor’s degree. Typical majors include geophysics, geoscience or combined geology and physics. Many go on to do honours or a master’s degree. About 41% of geoscientists hold a postgraduate qualification (ABS Census, 2021).

Salaries for geophysicists in Australia range from $80,000 to $100,000 a year (SEEK, 2026). Senior roles and those in Perth can earn much more. The field offers strong job security. It is a great choice for those who love science and want to make a real impact.

Geophysicists work across Australia’s mining, resources and science services sectors. About 13,600 people work in the broader geoscientist group nationally (Jobs and Skills Australia, 2025). The median age is 44 years, with 85% in full-time roles. Average work hours are about 51 per week (ABS, 2025).

Western Australia leads with over 52% of all geoscientist jobs. Queensland is second at about 19%, then Victoria at 12%. The field adds about 400 new positions per year. Education levels are high: 54.5% hold a bachelor’s degree and 41.3% hold postgraduate qualifications (ABS Census, 2021).

What will I do?

Geophysicists use physics and science to study the Earth’s layers and surface. Their work drives resource discovery, hazard research and environmental care. In Australia, mining is the largest employer, with strong demand in Western Australia and Queensland. Geophysicists work in both field and office settings, often in mixed-discipline teams.

  • Conduct Field Surveys – Geophysicists run seismic, magnetic, gravity and electromagnetic surveys in the field.
  • Analyse Data – They process and read data sets to map subsurface geology and find resource targets.
  • Build Geological Models – Geophysicists make 3D models of underground structures to guide exploration decisions.

What skills do I need?

A career in geophysics needs a strong base in science, especially physics and maths. These subjects sit at the core of all data work in the field. Geophysicists also need to explain findings clearly to engineers, clients and government bodies. Both technical and communication skills matter for career success.

Software and data tool skills are now a must. Many employers want experience with seismic software, GIS platforms and geological modelling tools. Fieldwork is a big part of the role, so fitness and comfort in remote settings are valued. Geophysicists who keep up with new tools tend to move ahead more quickly in their careers.
