What will I do?

Bar attendants are a key part of the bar team in pubs, bars, and licensed venues across Australia. They mix and serve a wide range of drinks to patrons. Their job is to keep the bar running well through every shift. As well as serving drinks, they keep the bar clean, take payments, and push the venue’s offers.

  • Preparing, serving and selling cocktails and mixed drinks, both bottled and on tap
  • Preparing and serving coffee beverages such as lattes, cappuccinos, and other espresso-based drinks
  • Cleaning and maintaining bar service areas, coffee-making areas and espresso machines
  • Collecting payment for sales and operating cash registers
  • Promoting services and products to patrons
  • Washing glassware and arranging bottles and glasses for display
  • Tapping kegs and attaching supply lines for draught beverages
  • Replenishing drink dispensers, shelves and refrigerators to ensure availability
  • Selling light snacks to accompany beverages
  • Selecting and grinding coffee for espresso-based drinks

What skills do I need?

Bar attendants need a mix of hands-on and people skills to do the job well. Knowing how to make cocktails, coffee, and draught beer is the core of the work. Good customer service and clear speech help bar attendants keep a warm feel and manage rush periods.

Care with drink prep, cleanliness, and cash keeps things running right. Bar attendants also need the stamina to stand for long shifts. Staying calm under stress and working well in a team are key traits for this role.
