In a Nutshell

The Certificate IV in Disability, offered by Open Colleges, prepares students in SA to pursue a range of positions, including supervisory roles, within the disability sector.

The course is divided into six main sections: empowering diverse people with disability; supporting individuals and their health needs; working safely, legally and ethically; behaviour support and skills development; person-centred service responses and inclusion; and communication and leadership. Students will learn how to safely provide direct client care, facilitate community participation and social inclusion for clients, provide advocacy and representation services, and much more.

Study consists of one day per week attending campus for facilitated learning, plus one half-day practical skills session per week. • STUDENT TESTIMONIALS

All student testimonials for Open Colleges

"It was very grounded in reality and it was practical as well as theoretical. I recommend doing the training before starting to write. I see people that will come to our writers group and say ‘I’ve got this lovely story, my kids love it, my grandchildren love it,’ and it would never get published because they haven’t done any training and they don’t know how to write."

Yvonne Mes , Certificate in Professional Children\'s Writing

"Because it’s so flexible, it was easy for me to do it. I’ll be in the middle of an assignment and I can just pause it if my son is asking for lunch. I’ll quickly make him lunch or get a drink and I can just open it back up and go straight back into it to continue. The trainers have been great. They really try to get back to you on time and make sure they give you the best possible answers. They always seem to come back with a quick response."

Emma Christian-Hayes , Certificate IV in Allied Health specialising in Physiotherapy

"It’s given me a different mindset. I used to think you’d go out and do a job, like mechanics, for years and that you’d just get the qualification after years on the job. But with this, you can study for a couple of months and then you can go out into the world fully qualified and ready for the job and just go for it."

Amy Stephenson , Certificate III in Accounts Administration

"I think the Open Colleges model is particularly good because you’re not tied down to due dates, you just have as much time as you need. You have people to get in touch with if you’re having trouble. I’ve actually had emails back at 10pm at night from my teacher. I’ve been sitting here and I’ve shot one off and they’ve got right back to me within that hour. You don’t get that anywhere."

Marcia Lindsay , Diploma of Hospitality

"I am a farmer and I run a family farm with my husband. I was given the opportunity to study any course I wanted that would help our business, and that may help me earn some money off the land, so I chose to learn bookkeeping. The course is so useful and beneficial for our farm. It’s great to learn how to set journals out so our accountant can do the BAS and income tax, without them being all over the place."

Robyn Hundy , Certificate IV in Bookkeeping
