About this course

This Graduate Diploma in Midwifery course involves both practical and theoretical training with a focus on evidence-based knowledge and skills in midwifery, giving you the capability to provide safe professional care to both the mother and her baby.

You will study legislation and common law affecting midwifery practice and be prepared to demonstrate the National Competency Standards for the Midwife, while also gaining an understanding of the practice of midwifery in the maternity care environment.

Practical work placement

In addition to your on-campus classes and coursework, Curtin University requires you to secure a student midwife clinical contract with a hospital for the duration of the clinical component of the course prior to commencement. A minimum of 1,500 hours of clinical practice are required to successfully complete the course.

  • Prerequisites


    To be eligible for entry into this course, applicants must meet the following entry requirements:

    • Completed a bachelor's degree in nursing or equivalent; AND
    • Have registration as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia; OR
    • Non-degree registered nurses may be admitted with an alternative mode of entry assessment; AND
    • Have recent clinical experience; AND
    • Have secured a student midwife clinical contract with a hospital for the duration of the clinical component of the course, which involves a minimum of 1,500 hours of practice.

    Regardless of your chosen area of study, Curtin University also requires that you demonstrate sufficient competency in English.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a Graduate Diploma in Midwifery from Curtin University.

You will be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, allowing you to provide care to mother and baby in a variety of maternity care settings.

This course is accredited by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council and approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

This course can be paid for through the FEE-HELP government loan scheme. If you are an Australian citizen or hold a permanent humanitarian visa, you may not need to pay upfront.

Instead, the Australian government will pay your course fees directly to the provider on your behalf. You'll begin repaying your loan through the tax system once you start earning more than the minimum threshold of $54,869 (2016-17 income year).
