Gain comprehensive training in geoscience and geology skills with this Bachelor of GeoScience degree and take the first step towards a rewarding career in the booming Australian mineral export industry.

Choose one of three majors on offer: geospatial systems, mineral systems or environmental systems. Core topics of study include resource geology and environmental issues, optical mineralogy and igneous petrology, exploration and environmental geochemistry, field mapping and sedimentology, palaeontology and applied geophysics. 

Offered online or on-campus at the University of New England (UNE), this course gives you maximum flexibility and a range of diverse career opportunities.

  • Prerequisites


    To be eligible for entry into this course, applicants must meet the following entry requirements:

    • Have completed Australian senior secondary studies with an ATAR equal to or above this year's admission cut-off; OR
    • Have completed an overseas secondary or tertiary qualification/s deemed equivalent; OR
    • Have completed, or partially completed, an approved Australian post-secondary or tertiary qualification; OR
    • Have completed an approved admission scheme or pathway; OR
    • Satisfied the requirements of an approved inter-institution agreement; OR
    • Obtained other equivalent qualifications and/or vocational experience; OR
    • Satisfied the requirements for non-standard admission.

    Assumed knowledge is any two units of general mathematics, mathematics or mathematics extension; studies in chemistry and/or physics are recommended (for students without the recommended background knowledge, the School offers introductory units in chemistry, mathematics and physics). 

    You may be eligible for advanced standing if your previous education and experience meet certain criteria.

    • Field mapping and sedimentology

    • Geological field mapping

    Plus a combination of the following units:

    • Quantitative skills with applications; OR
    • Calculus and linear algebra I; AND
    • Introduction to statistical modelling

Eligible students can apply for HECS-HELP to cover the upfront costs of all or part of your fees. Alternatively, you can pay annually for the units you select to study in that year.

The University of New England also offers a number of scholarships to successful applicants.


You may be eligible to receive HECS-HELP for this course!

This course can be paid for through the HECS-HELP government loan scheme. If you are an Australian citizen or hold a permanent humanitarian visa, you may not need to pay upfront.

Instead, the Australian government will pay your course fees directly to the provider on your behalf. You'll begin repaying your loan through the tax system once you start earning more than the minimum threshold of $54,869 (2016-17 income year).
