About this course

Interested in the possibilities of a career in modern science? The Diploma of Laboratory Technology (MSL50109) combines on-campus study with hands-on industry experience, equipping you with the skills and knowledge to perform diverse laboratory work in a number of fields.

Specialising in biotechnology and pathology testing, this on-campus TAFE course will teach you to apply and carry out a range of processes and procedures, including aseptic techniques, microscopic examinations and haematological, microbiological and pathology tests. You'll study in a simulated clinical laboratory environment using the latest technology and equipment.

Regular self-directed learning and an obligatory work placement make this an ideal pathway for a fulfilling science career.

    To be eligible for this course, applicants must meet the following entry requirements:

    • Provide evidence that you have completed Year 12, or undertake an independent assessment test to ensure that your skills are at Year 12 level
    • If there are more applications than course places available, you might be asked to attend an interview. Applicants who demonstrate an interest in, and understanding of, the industry and the skills and knowledge required to work in it will be given preference.

    Recognition of prior learning (RPL) may be available for skills and knowledge obtained through previous study or other relevant experience.

All course fees at The Gordon are comprised of tuition, student amenities, and materials costs. Depending on your personal circumstances, you may fall into one of the following fee categories:


  • Standard – you meet the eligibility criteria for access to the government subsidised Victorian Training Guarantee (VTG).
  • Concession – you meet the VTG eligibility criteria AND hold a current healthcare or pension card.
  • Full-fee paying/Fee for Service (FFS) – you do not meet the VTG eligibility criteria
