Delivered by Open Universities Australia in partnership with Macquarie University, this course is designed as a postgraduate gateway qualification into the niche field of early childhood education.

Approved by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) and developed in consultation with early childhood education experts, this program is everything you need to build a successful career in the field.

The program of study is underpinned by a play-based philosophy to teaching and learning, and incorporates a multidisciplinary approach to examining a child’s development processes. Drawing on the latest research-based findings in early childhood development, the curriculum covers everything from early childhood philosophy and pedagogy, through to creativity in young children and government policies.

Through the various practical components, students will also be given the opportunity to put their theoretical knowledge into practice.

Practical placement

As a part of this course, students are required to complete three professional placements in a variety of early childhood settings. The placements must comprise of:

  • 20 days with infants and toddlers
  • 20 days with 2-5 year olds
  • 30 days, completed as 3 days x 10 weeks with 2-5 year olds

    • Hold an Australian bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification

    AND

    • Have achieved a minimum GPA of 2.5 (out of 4.0) or equivalent

    AND

    • Obtain a Working with Children Check (WWCC)
